I have two Taricha granulosa newts in a 20 long. They are in a botany laboratory classroom. Tonight before leaving for the day I saw the male pinning the female against the corner of the tank. She did not seem stressed, and I swear he was hugging her. Is this some sort of amplexus? Use the link to see pics of them, but I didnt take any pics of them in the act since I didnt want to disturb them.

Sounds like it. The male will amplex the female from the top behind the front legs. Amplexus doesn't necessarily lead to eggs though. Mine have been amplexing for months to no avail.

I didn't see any eggs. She still looks like she is loaded with them. But its good to know they are trying.
Thanks guys.

If this is what they are doing then all you have to do is provide some romantic leaves and candlelight.
