Hi Everyone,

So, in the attached photos, you will see lots of leucistics and albinos in my current batch. There are about 3-4 spotted grey babies which appear melanoid or possibly purples?
The father is golden albino, and the mother is leucistic. To my knowledge, all grandparents were NOT melanoid(Golden, leucy,WT). Great grandparents, etc, I have no idea.
To me, they look different than WT larvae. There is no yellow or green, and their eyes do not seem to have a shiny ring('course they are very small yet). What do you think? I took these pics a few days ago... They just hatched today :)

They do look like melanoids. I got melanoids too even though the mother didn't have any melanoids in her family that i know of, but as it is a recessive trait it can be passed on unnoticed for a long time. There should be around 25% melanoids(or melanoid leucistics and melanoid albinos).

Now that you mention it, it does make sense because the mother is Leucy my leucistic.... and I have noticed that she does appear to be melanoid. In my tiredness last night, my brain forgot this detail I guess! Lol :dizzy:

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
