Arm became stuck in filter intake

another reason NOT to have filters in axolotl tanks. filters just cause too many problems, just do manual water changes makes life much easier for the creatures.

Filters are definitely beneficial as long as the intake is properly protected.

No, filters are a great way to provide aeration and build up beneficial bacteria.

you all seem to treat axolotls like they are fish which they are not, they do not need filters, in fact they like a bit of dirty water.
they dont have filters in their natural envirnoment, why introduce that to captive bred. in the wild their water is less than clean why do you all insist on giving them clean water, turn your filters off and you will see it does not harm the environment they live in.

I don't use filters in my tanks either. i do a water change every 3 to 4 days. i use rainwater that gets collected in the watertank. i have no issues with all this ammonia, nitrates etc etc.

No, they do not need filters, but under what basis can you say they "like a bit of dirty water"?

People use filters to keep things like ammonia from spiking and killing their animals. Seriously. Most fish ponds don't have filters either, however, a fish tank is not a natural environment, and therefore must not be left alone like one. You can't just leave waste alone.

I'm gonna have to agree to disagree with you about not having a filter. Axolotls are from large bodies of water not aquariums that are much smaller. I can see the benefits of not having a filter, but to me the benefits of having a filter outweigh the benefits of not having one. In the end it's really all about if the axolotl is happy. If it is well than good on yah.

Sad story! Hope the little guy is getting better. To put some hope in you i will post pictures of my Leonidas. I bought him in a realy bad state with arm rotting off. It fell of on its own. After a month he looks different the arm is growing nicely and he gat some weight. Did not fridge him just kept clean and fed earthworms, goopies and chicken livers. Worked for Leonida so your little guy should be ok. Keep us updated!!!

They sell square filter sponges. Buy one and cut a hole in the middle and slide it over the intake pipe. I don't use a filter either. I just do a 20% water change once a week and have an air stone running. Axolotls naturally live in lakes. Lakes do have a slight current created by heating and cooling but mainly buy the wind across the surface. Many axolotls do not like the strong current of a power filter. If you do use one glue a plastic lip on the power filter to spread the water across the surface and not straight down to the bottom of the tank, If you want a filter a internal sponge filter is best in my opinion.
