dale - It will take at least 30 days for your tank to cycle. It would be easier to wait until your tank has cycled to buy an axolotl.

You can register for this site here:
http://www.caudata.org/forum/cgi-bin/board-profile.cgi?action=register

Here are some links to axolotl info you should read, tank cycling: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml
and caudata's sister site http://www.axolotl.org that is full of care information.

I would recommend you buy a test kit that will allow you to test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph. You will need a test kit so you know when your tank has finished cycling and to test your water through out your tanks life to make sure the water is safe.

Liquid test kits (that use drops) have worked better for me than the dip strip type.

If you have never cycled a tank before please do read the above article and then google aquarium cycling for more information.
