Hi Everyone, I just thought id let you know that I went to a very good aquarium store today who sell Axies. They have told me that they have lost all axies that were sold BY them in the last few weeks. She said this has never happened before. I told them that I lost Petal which is how we got onto this subject. This is really scary.
The same symptoms, go off food therefore lose alot of weight plus mouth gets sores and stiffens.
She said that their mouths were stuck shut and some mouths were stuck open.
The axies in aquarium shop were doing really well as they have wonderful tank setups but when they where sold they all came back sick.
It must be the water.
Has anyone seen these symptoms??}

Oh Helen, you lost Petal? I'm soooo sorry to hear that. I know how much she meant to you. So very sorry to hear that

I just read your other post too. Myself am crying now. I wish you strength. I hope you will take another axie in Petal's memory in a few months time, even if it seems impossible just now

Thankyou Sherri, you are so sweet,
I dont think I can go through this again though,
I really dont trust our water quality plus the temp fluctuations in our town make it really stressful keeping temps down.
Petal thrived in winter,
Ive put her tunnel, bridge on top of her plus more petals. The rose in the pot is the same colour as her, which is where her name came from, plus her gills looked just like little petals!!
Its like a release now and Im at peace too.
Love to you and your axie.
Helen

Whats the go with this mouth disease?

Hi, I know its been a few months but Ive only just found this site. Having kept axolotls for over 20 years, this one is new to me. I lost my 10 year old Algy in March to a disease similar to what is described here. I thought it was just old age, probably cancer. The main symptom was that his lower jaw (?teeth ?tongue) appeared to become distorted and almost rotting from the inside. Eventually he stopped eating and died. Now my younger (now 9yo) Butterboy seems to have the same thing! Now Im paranoid that this is some sort of infection that attacks the mouth of axolotls, maybe a parasite in Australian petfood or as you say the water in this awful time of drought. The main difference is that in our case the process took nearly a year and the animal(s) appear(ed) basically active and happy until the last few days. Still, they deserve a better end than this! Is there a vet on this site that could advise on this? Is there something wrong with the water or maybe even the food in this country ? Maybe I should send a digital photo if anyone else can help. I am sorry if I am reawakening painful memories of the loss of your dearly loved pet. Believe me, I know how it feels.
