Every now and then, my axies go to the surface for a gulp of air. When my female goes up, she usually makes no noise or at most a tiny little squeak. When my male goes up, he makes a sound like a bark each and every time.

My husband never noticed before until last night - and it scared the heck out of him. He jumped out of bed and was like "What was that?!" He thought our tenant had brought a dog into the house - it took a few minutes to convince him that it was actually my axie boy! :p

Does anyone elses axies make a barking noise or is it all just squeaks like my girl?

I've never heard my axolotls bark, but I have heard my tigers, and my jefferson. Stands to reason, though; they're all in the same genus.

Just FYI: they're not actually vocalizing, but just... forcefully exhaling.

Oh I know they aren't actually making the noise....vocally for lack of a better term

yes our melanoid female does it

I have never heard this! Someone record them for me lol, mine swims to the top when it thinks i have food but apart from that she likes to be stable on the bottom or hanging out in the anubias lol x

Mine does this! i always thought it sounded like he was singing! so cute. He also made a aloud squeeking sound once when i was moving him during a water change :D
