Hi guys,
i`ve got axolotl - Bob now for 3 weeks. I did mistake and listened to the guy in store which made me sure you just put axolotl without any changes to fish tank and he will be happy. After we bringed him home i readed whole night and on next day removed all fishes and left just pleco and 2 guppys. old fish tank was full of plants he had a lot of places to hide, and i was feeding him eartworms from hand cause i read about gravel and axolotls and didnt want him to eat it. In this fishtank he was for 4 days and eating 2 or 3 worms per day. Later he stopped eating so much maybe one worm per day. I changed gravel for sand and bought new hiding places, reduces plants and put filter on without bubles to dont disturb too much and use aerostone to bring some air. In the process of changing i putted him to fridge to dont get stress and because he/she started a bit floating back legs.. Filter during change stayed in water. He stayed in fridge for 48 hours and didnt poo. After that i putted him to his new tank. Since than, He was eating just half of worm. I tried pellets - no interest. bloodworms - sometimes he ate a bit. I tried waxworms - he ate one, Today i gave him earthworm in few intervals and i could see he is really fighting with that trying to eat him. In all cases he just spit them out after big fight. I dont know now, water is all in good levels, changing a bit of it everyday after cleaning bloodworms which im trying to feed without big success. Temperature is at 20 degrees, using frozen bowls to keep it on that temperature. He is usually in good mood, just swimming around but getting stressed after eating/not eating. I`m adding few pictures for better look. I already made space in the fridge to put him there. Is that good idea? should i put some worms by the day inside bowl in fridge to make him eat? Thank you for any help and any ideas.

I think it would be a good idea to put him in the fridge until he has a large poo.

Thanks for your help. I think the same way, probably i will have to leave him there longer than two days-until he makes poo. Its just that usually they make poo in fridge after 24 hours, he already been there once for 48 hours and nothing happened, he just stopped floating. Now its almost one week after that and i couldnt find any proper poo in his tank.

I read a post on line at Buy-Axolotls.com about mixing Miralax or any other clear water soluble laxative into the water at the same dose as if you were going to take it your self. Then put the axolotl in that solution in the fridge for 24 hours. This is supposedly the best way to clear any blockage the axie has. I don't know if it works or even if it is safe for the axolotl. Has anyone else heared of this or know if it is safe?

Well today he was fighting with earthworm again trying to swallow him, but he couldnt. Its like he`ve got something stucked on the way..i putted him in the fridge, will probably have to stay there until he will hopefully poo, i hope fridging will help..any advices will be appreciated, thanks

Buy-Axolotls is an appalling reference and I really wouldn't listen to any advice given on there. The most basic care on there is wrong. Please don't give your axolotl laxatives.

Josephbob he's probably impacted because you put him on gravel, he might have eaten the gravel and now it's stuck inside him. If he can't pass it on his own he will most likely die unfortunately. They can sick it out or poo it out. You need to be doing daily water changes in the fridge. There's a fridging guide on here.
I'd also remove the other fish you house him with. Pleco's can't be eaten by axolotl because they have barbs on their back - they're dangerous and not worth the risk. The guppies aren't so bad but you don't know if they are harbouring disease. They can also pick at his gills and really damage him.

Hi, thank for advices Emily. Pleco is same size like him and they completely ignoring each other (i would say they are both scared) but i removed guppies just in case. Yesterday he finally pooped in the fridge, i left him there to relax one more day and today i moved him back to his tank. I hope tomorrow when I willfeed him, he will be able to swallow the earthworms again. I dont know if there is any connection between his low apetite and this, but he has really bad looking gills as well. He had them in this condition when we get him from shop - he was there in small tank with hot water and another 3 axolotls. I was thinking its gonna get better but they still looks same, those hairs are curled and almost not visible. Water levels are all good, changing a bit of water everyday after feeding, running filter and aerostone on low level. Temperature 20C. I dont know if there is anything how i can help him get the gills fixed. After reading a lot of articles I dont think is fungus so salt baths are not necessary. Should fridge him again? I will try to feed him tomorrow and see if he will eat and I will make detailed picture of his gills. Thank you for help.

Taking him in and out of the fridge is going to cause a lot of stress with temperature fluctuations. People tend to rush to the idea of fridging but in my opinion this treatment is overused and often unecessary. If you can keep him in a tub of fresh dechlorinated water (change 100% water daily) and keep this cool, this should be enough. Can you post the water parameter readings in the tank? It is really not suitable to keep plecos with axolotl's. Besides the different temperature requirements, plecos can cause damage to axolotl's slime coats and it is not worth risking.

hi, skudo09 thanks for advices. So the water parameters are:
NO3: 15
NO3: 0
GH: >7d
KH:6d
pH:7,2

I tried to feed him today, because when i came home Bob was already waiting and checking me. He didnt go for smaller worm, but he tried a bit thicker one. I cutted him to appropriate size. Bob tried few more times even after spiting him out on the ground but couldnt get him in. After that he got dissapointed and stressed and hide in the back of the tank. He is upset on me as well, i dont think he is gonna get out from there soon. If he will im gonna try give him some thinner one or wax worm. if thats not gonna help maybe frozen bloodworms but usually he is not intersted in them. I really dont know what im doing wrong. Im adding some pictures with detailed gills. thank you for helping

What test kit are you using? Do you have ammonia tests as well? If it is a strip test, invest in a liquid one instead. Liquid ones are far more reliable than strip test kits. The API Freshwater Master kit is popular and has the main ones needed including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH.

I can't see any fungus from the pics. Some axolotl's don't have big fluffy gills. But if they are damaged, keeping him in optimum water conditions will be the best thing for healing.

Well i had just stripes but i was thinking ammonia should be fine, cause tank is new, few staff from old tank but new sand etc. ive ordered liquid one today cause they had just stripes in my local pet store. Bob ate few bloodworms yesterday and today, looks like he stopped with earthworms for now. He didnt eat too much but better than nothing. Pleco and guppyes did get new tank today so everybody should be happy now :)

Hi, i didnt updated whats going on, so I would like to thank anyone ho helped, bob is fine again. By the time i get liquid tests he was chilling in fridge, i changed light in tank for LED almost no light, putted more hiding spots and cycle his tank. After checking with liquid ammonia was at zero lvl, just nitrite 0,25 so i was in nitrite stage of cycling, changing water everyday. Now he is back in the tank, eating and poo just fine. Still changing 20% of water daily, tomorrow would do test again, maybe at zero this time :) thanks again, this webpage is really helpful. :D

If he is fighting the worm, it is too big. Smaller worms or cut up ones should be easier to eat.
