Hello guys. I notice that whenever i look at Ponyo over her tank she floats up to look at me. Is this normal or unique or a cause of concern? Usually she only goes down once i leave out of her eyesight. I find it very cute how she greets me like that but is this normal or is this gas or bloat or something? Thanks!

Mine does this too! He has as long as I've had him. I like to think it's because he loves me but he's probably just hoping for food

Yeah, its so cute! Sometimes when she floats its a bit annoying as when im feeding her i dont want her to swallow too much air and float for a while.

Maybe she's learned to associate you with food.
i can't remember where but i read somewhere that axolotls can recognize people as food sources and will anticipate feeding when they see said person. mudkip has definitely convinced me of this, every time i walk in the room she swims up to say hello!

I confirm :
Caudates larvae (axolotl, ribbed newt, Tylototriton...) only 2 cm long (less than 1 inch) end up reaching the top when someone is bringing food.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
