I have two golden axolotl who I think are smart. They both ?beg? for food by swimming up to the top and over to me. My female is the worst she will stick her nose and top of head out of the water and look at me so cute. They know when we come near the tank and will come over to whatever side were at. Im not sure but I think they toy with the cats also. My female also will get into my hand and sit there...I DO NOT recomend anyone handle your axolotl ... I NEVER grab her or pick her up but i let her climb on me very gentle and never force her as she does this voluntarily. Anyways just wanted to see if anyone has similar experience.:D

here she is

Since I rasised one of my axie's from egg, if I peer over the tank he will look up and swim towards me. I think they can recognise certain things like when I used to peer at him when he was a baby in a lunch box. Your axie will still be like any other axolotl, if something moves they may snap at it (hence moving the substrate you said you would do in the other post) and are not entirely smart.

Caudates quickly realise that those big shapes outside the tank appear to be a source of food. After a while, every time you move next to the enclosure, they automatically expect food and so they become frenzied and "beg".
This type of simple association is very basic, and even fish develop it too, it´s certainly not a sign of advanced inteligence.
Some even try to bite the glass in a desperate attempt to reach that thing on the other side. They also get confused by the movement of other newts around and snap at them. In the more agressive species this can be a problem since they can really hurt each other thinking they are food.
They are actually quite simple and primitive with no capacity for complex resolutions. To put it mildly they are "dumb as a rock" :p But oh so cute.....

I forgot to mention she also plays fetch, roll over, and sit!!!!!! _ jk

xDD

One thing that fascinates me is that they also make a connection between tweezers and food if you hand-feed...but they will follow and bite the tweezers even if they have nothing at all xD We can sleep tight knowing that they will never dominate the world....

not the smartest not the dumbest...but the coolest. ...axolotl rule.

Basic problem solving is not exactly an axolotl's strong suit. One of my lovees tried for a solid ten minutes to walk through a very large rock in its path, the rock didn't move out of the way (they never do) and there was just no way the axolotl was going to let that rock win . When he finally realized the rock was not going anywhere, he then just sat and stared at it...for another ten or so minutes. But this just adds to their goofy charm.

Hi I think my axolotl Berta is very clever . if my dad and I stand by the tank Berta will come over to me ,and tends to ignore my dad.
