Axolotl jumped out of tank - hurt bad please advise urgently.

Yes, he/ she should be fridged, but as far as feeding, don't be surprised if it throws it up. When they are that cold, it's very hard for them to digest food, so a lot of times they will throw it up, so it doesn't go bad in their stomach. But since their metabolism is slowed way down, it's okay since they use far less energy.

Good luck!

Pretty sure he's dead, he's stopped moving since last night. :(

Hi,

Thanks for your private message. I am not sure if I responded too late but I hope your axolotl is still going well. It will be worthwhile to first check that it is still alive if you haven't done so.

What you can do really depends on whether you have access to a local vet and how much you are willing to spend. If you can take your axolotl to a vet, I would recommend asking your vet to provide some anti-inflammatory and analgesic which will relieve any swelling and pain. Personally I use meloxicam quite successfully with axolotls. With pain relief and controlled inflammation, all it requires is time, good nutrition and water quality for your axolotl to heal on its own.

If the above option is not available, the only option is to use modified husbandry (axolotl keeping) to try aid its natural healing. With immediate injury (1-3 days), I would fridge the axolotl, keeping it cool and in the dark without disturbance to prevent secondary infections from the physical trauma setting in. This is the period when it will be most susceptible to secondary infections particularly if there is a breach to the skin. It will also provide some level of additional comfort for the axolotl. Don't worry about feeding the axolotl at this stage. Metabolism is slow when fridging (hence healing also slower).

After 2-3 days, depending on the state of the axolotl, I would consider moving it to warmer waters (around 16-17 degrees Celsius) with some added aquarium salt. The water temperature will still be cool yet warm enough to increase the metabolism of the axolotl higher. This promotes feeding and also wound healing. This is the time when I would offer it easily digestible and nutritious food (earthworms, pellets, blackworms) to aid in its recovery.

Regards

He is in the fridge now, but I'm really not sure if he is still alive.. He was responding to my voice yesterday but is completely unmoving now, do you get that when they are fridged? I'm worried my fridge is getting too cold as well (if he's even still alive) He's around 3c and that's the warmest my old fridge seems to want to go! I've tried my local vets but they all said, an axa whatta? So no joy there :/

Im sorry to hear about your lottles accident.
Axies respond to vibrations via a line down there spine and low frequency sounds so talking to him wont necessarly make him move.
Have you tried putting a little bit of live food in to see if that interests him?

As for lids and tank temp ect, you could always use a mesh lid of some sort or ive heard people use egg crate (i dont know if thats the right word) so that there is a lid (that they cant escape from), but its not adding heat to the tub :D

3 degrees C is getting a bit too cold. Wrap the container in a towel and see if that helps a little.

Yes, axies slow down a lot when in the fridge, especially when the are ill/ injured. They also get pale.

Hope he's doing okay!

He's died :(

Thats very sad, I'm so sorry you lost your axy.

I totally sympathize with you, Alkylahide. I run warm anyway, and then sleep on a memory foam mattress, so the last week or so hasn't been great for sleeping. :(

When I get paid on the 10th, I'm buying a portable, sits on the floor AC unit. Going to run about $250, but SO worth it! That way the axies can be back in their tank, cool and happy, and I can SLEEP cool and happy. LOL :D

Oh man i can tell you its worth it! I bought a 14000BTU portable A/C yesterday for 150$, poor man could not figure out how to use it so he was selling it so he could go out and get one that was more simple. but it was brand new! all my lotls are back in the tank, the water is at a steady 68F I slept comfy for the first time in a little bit last night! all around happy

Thanks guys, pretty gutted too. We gave him a watery grave at the local nature reserve and floated flowers above him to say goodbye. x x x

poor little guy :( I hope he gets better soon, just believe in him and he will hopefully bounce back
