I have 1 month old wildtype axolotl larvae at the moment and I had read somewhere about raising them in individual containers, has anyone had any experience of this? I have sorted mine into 3 seperate tanks according to size and all doing well.Just wondered if there was anything in this individual housing.

The idea with the single-cup method is that the larvae are never in competition for food, and cannot stress each other. Also it allows for a totally complete clean-out of each container every day or two. I use a modified version of this. I keep 5-10 larvae of similar size per container, with no airation except for the open top. Each container is the bottom half of a 1-gallon plastic jug. I do a 100% water change daily (starting when they begin to be fed), and wipe out the inside of the container every few days. I return them to a tank setup when they are old enough to hunt down whole blackworms.

Amazing, the 100% water changes and pouring larvae back and forth among containers doesn't harm them at all.

I had a batch of Triturus larvae last year that were in a tank, and all dieing from fungus infections. When I switched to using this jug method, I had much better survival.

I reared fire salamander larvae in margarine tubs
2 to a tub. I also put in a small piece of moss
which they semmed to like to lie under for cover.
I used this method because as they grew they became very aggressive and started grabbing each other at feeding time.DO baby sallies get aggressive as they grow?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
