Axolotl not eating

Hi,
1/2 of my axolotl didnt eat this feeding session, she normaly eats every 3 days but this time she didnt eat, bloodworms or the beef/prawn, she apears to be laying kinda flat on the bottom of the tank, and acting a bit different,
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10
ph 7


any ideas?
 
Try her again today. Sometimes they do refuse food, it isn't necessarily anything to worry about. Just keep a close eye on her and if she starts to exhibit signs of bloat or distress etc then try and get her seen by a vet. Good Luck.
 
Still hasnt eaten ive tried every day for 4 days now, Shes starting to look thinner
 
offer her different food. crickets usually break hunger strikes.

Im buying crickets and Seachem entice tommorow and see how that goes,
Crickets live or should i cut the head off to avoid biting or what not?

Freeze the crickets beforehand- it'll put them to sleep (if you leave them in for too long it'll kill them, so be careful! I always accidentally leave them in for too long and have to keep them in there otherwise they smell...). Then you dont need to worry about chopping them (unless they're too big, of course. You can get heaps of different sizes)

One of the members on the facebook group who is also from Australia has been worried about her axolotl who didn't eat for 2 1/2 weeks. She took him to the vet, where he was examined and x-rayed, and as there was no obvious reason like infection or obstruction they put it down to temperature fluctuations in the tank. They force fed him and he is now eating by himself.
Do you think the temperature could be an issue in your tank? I know it's a constant struggle in Australian summer time....

Edit: sorry just noticed you said temperature is 18. Are you managing to keep it constant? If so how? I'd love to pass on the information :)
 
Temp at highest is normally used to reach 25, but i added a cooling fan to stable at 23 and do relays of ice blocks, but lately since the weather has calmed down and its getting cooler its stable at 18-21c it doesnt really fluctuate more than 2-3 degrees a day, do you think thats still too high?

I tried feeding her crickets today and no luck though my other axolotl in the same tank snapped it up and loved it,


was wondering if fridging her would help in any way
?
 
I have the exact same situation with temp. I got the cooling fan (best purchase ever!), and use ice blocks. Unless there's some crazy headwave in my room (in which case, into the fridge my girl goes!), it tops at 21deg, but normally sits at 19. The heat should hopefully be over soon, so that'll help!
I believe that fridging will slow the metabolism, so in one way she won't get so skinny so fast, but in another way it might make her less likely to eat (not sure about this though- may have read another thread wrong). Are you able to get worms?
 
Have you tried earthworms? Axolotls can't resist wriggly worms. They might need chopping up so the axolotl can swallow them, but they still wriggle even when they're chopped into bits. :lol:
 
My understanding from advice on the forum is that fridging slows metabolism making an axolotl less likely to eat so isn't usually suggested as a way to increase appetite. I'm not sure that would be the best way to go as the reason for your axolotl's lack of appetite remans unclear.

Well as far as worms go i find it really hard to find in nsw, ive tried all garden stores and bunnings and bait shops but i struggle to find,
As for now ive got the crickets and ive stopped using ice blocks and just letting the temp sit stable at 20c for a few days and she seems to be feeling better, she nipped at some food today but didnt get any and then refused anything further but ill keep you guys posted thanks for the help,

It really does suck about the summer time for axies, iif only aquarium chillers went 100s of dollars.

Kookaburra Worms sell mature compost worms, just search online. I bought 2000 worms and my worm farm is working well. They also sell bait worms to BCF stores, the "Catchall Crawler". I know my little ones like them, they are in the compost worms that I got, they are European Nightcrawlers. I didn't like the Bunnings worms, there weren't enough in the box and there were very few mature worms (in my boxes anyhow).
