Hi, I have 2 axolotl in a 70L tank with pool filter sand, now most grains are 1mm and under in size but maybe 20-30% of them are 1.5-2mm in size, 1 of the axies seems to eat the sand,
I was thinking of switching to Play sand as its finer but then theres more risk of gas pocket build ups etc,

Thoughts?

Couldn't hurt, but generally when they eat they'll spit the sand out, especially if its only a little bit bigger.

But everyone seems to come to a general consensus that washed playsand is pretty much one of the best options.

My only concern was the gas pockets with the play sand and being harder to clean ""

Your sand is fine, but your axolotls look pretty thin. What is your feeding schedule like?

You may want to switch to a different food from beef heart, beef heart is too fatty and harder to digest(which may have causes the constipation), I would recommend switching to blood worms or, better yet, earthworms. I mix foods and once in a blue moon use beef heart but only as an occasional treat but my main food source is pellets, worms, and blood worms. I feed my guys every other day or every 2 days. Temp plays a role too, the higher the temp the more food is required as their metabolism speeds up.

Earthworms are one of the best foods out there. They have an excellent calcium to phosphorous ratio (for strong bones), aren't too fatty, and are close to natural food for axolotls.

Everything else (except quality pellets) should be considered a treat, not a main staple.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
