My axolotl has been splashing at the top of his tank, its not constant just every 10-20 minutes but I am a little concerned, is this normal?

Is it gulping air? Test your water to make sure the levels are fine. Look for tail curling (at the tip) and gills curled forward as signs of stress

Yes it is, I just got it yesterday could that be the cause of the stress? They are in a temporary tank with bottled water ( the breeder I got them from said this is fine for now ) until Saterday when I believe their tank will be cycled. They are energetic their water is cool and they are eating fine and they are curious and exploring.

I would change the water just in case. Cool declhlorinated water is essential.

Okay thank you so much, I will get different water, the curled gills have gone away now though, I will still change water just in case.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
