Today i noticed my axolotl tail is shrinking..whats wrong?is this normal?

Can you post a picture of the tail before & after? How fast is it shrinking?

Have you tested your water lately? What are the readings? What is the tank water temperature?

I agree some photos and stats would be helpful as a shrinking tail and can be a sign of metamorphosis which in captive bred axolotls is extremely rare

I don't see much of a difference, beyond what would be normal for a growing axolotl.

Your water is too warm. Axolotls like cold water. It's best if you can keep it under 20c.

in the picture it looks the same..but actually its tail is smaller than before..i will lower my temperature..

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
