Axolotl tank help!

Hi, I've recently adopted an axolotl and I have been cycling his tank now for about a month. It is processing 2ppm of ammonium in a day, but the levels of nitrite are still really high. Am I doing something wrong or is there a way to speed up the nitrite processing? Thank you!
P.S He is not in the tank, but in a container with lots of water switches happening.

make sure you have enough bio-media or large enough filter, ensure adequate oxygenation.
be aware by cycling at 2ppm you may encounter issues when axolotl is an adult.
