is it true that Axolotls require brackish water? i just read something online saying " Axolotls prefer slightly hard water, which means they prefer water that has a good concentration of dissolved salts. Depending on your tap water, you may already have enough dissolved salts to satisfy your axolotl. " is this true?

They do better with harder water.

I use Johns solution in all my tanks at 20% and am starting to switch over to Holtfreters solution as I just ordered the Calcium and Potassium I needed.

I find I have no anemia issues and no fungus issues

Hard water is different from brackish water. They are two very different things.

Hard water has a more dissolved minerals, not just salt. Crushed coral, oyster shells and limestone can harden water. Some fish, like many livebearers, do better in hard water.

Brackish water is specifically water with a higher concentration of salt, i.e. sodium chloride.

I don't keep an axolotl, but I would not recommend keeping one in brackish water.

They do best in hard water. If your water is not hard adding hotfretters solution is good. I prefer to add about a tablespoon of aquarium salt, marine salt, rock salt, or solar salt per 10 gallons of water. It does a cheap approximation of what Hotfretters does.

I do keep lots of axolotls and do recommend adding salt or minerals of some sort.
