Do you guys know if the tips of their tails could be caught in the filter thing? I don't know what else could have possibly caused the tears at the end of his tail. Is it possible he got it caught under his shelter?

Also are there any tips on helping it heal faster?

It probably would help if I posted a photo huh.

It's a little blurry but you can see the tears.

Here's another photo. Is it a rip or is it a fungus? His tank water is normally around 64 degrees. :( I just want to make him feel better so any tips would be helpful. He is swimming just fine and he is eating normally. Hisngills aren't also curled so hopefully it's just a cut that will heal. Aha sorry for all of the posts I'm anxious and it's finals week.

That is minor damage, not even worth worrying about if your tank is cycled and water temperature is correct. It will heal in its own in time.

I'm not sure what hides/ornaments you use in your tank but perhaps the tail got caught in something or perhaps there is a sharp edge somewhere. is there another Axolotl is the tank ?

He has gotten cut from his house before because there were sharp edges that I didnt know about inside of it (thanks petsmart) but I sanded everything down in it. It's possible I missed something? I was just worried that it was a fungus. And he's the only one in the tank.

Its not fungus. Fungus appears like a fuzzy cotton wool substance. The tip of the tail shows no fungus, just damaged tissue which will go pale and die off and then regenerate.

If he's the only one in the tank he must have caught it between something or snagged it on something.

It's minor damage, but ideally you would like to know how it was caused. But it may have just been a one off unlucky incident.

Okay! Thank you for the help. I'll go through his tank again and make sure everything is smooth and safe.

Thanks again!

One of mine had an almost identical looking slice down his tail last week. Could have been anything. Regardless, did an extra water change and it's already growing back. It doesn't seem to matter how smooth things are, sometimes they just manage to take a chunk out of themselves somehow!
