Help...our female axolotyl about 5-6 years old is huge. In the past 5 months she has tripled in size, is incredibly bloated, floats upside down numerous times a day and doesn't want to eat. It has got so bad that now even her legs are starting to swell and she cannot touch the bottom of the tank because her legs are too short. Reading up online we think she has impacted stones and possibly egg retention. She used to be on stones ~5mm in size but at the start of the year we changed her to gravel ~1mm in size because she has always eaten the stones then pooped them out, but we noticed that she started to retain them and I think that's when the problems started. Fridging her made absolutely no difference, she hasn't pooped anything in weeks and honestly we are so worried that we don't think she is going to get better. There aern't many vets who deal with axys in NZ and surgery to remove the gravel and eggs seems like a very drastic option...is there anything else we can do for her aside keeping her in the fridge for longer?? We have tried water changes, salt baths and someone even suggested an epsom salt bath for an hour?!

Salt baths and refrigeration are the only options I know of aside from surgery. Why gravel? That's the worst thing you can put them on. You need to be using either sand or nothing at all.

No such thing as egg bound with amphibians; unlaid eggs are resorbed.

Perhaps you should read the CC articles on bloat?
