Aztec is acting weird

I think 67F - I ended up pulling him out and putting him in a container with shallow water and he's doing SO much better this morning! still a little floaty in back, but able t stay on the ground and ate a worm for me :)

Sounds like he may have been stressed from the move. When you put him back, do it slower this time. I think one of the ways that some people do this is to set the smaller container inside the tank, as long as it floats, anyway. This will get the water within the container to the same temperature, and you can add tank water a little at a time. If he starts to look stressed, slow down the pace a little. It's tedious, but it should work just fine.

So glad to hear. :)

 Please don't take tthis the wrong, it took me forever to find a name for my Axie and I read and read this forum at the different names and never saw the name Aztec so around the end of July I finally named my guy Aztec........

Now the new wild I just got will have to wait a while before it gets named

I will read more post and look for a different name

Okay Aztec is now back in the big tank with his buddies, and staying down!

During all this he seems to have lost ALL the fluffy part of his gills :/ So is this a new worry? Will they grow back? Does he need anything specific!?!

The fluff will grow back. Axolotls breathe through their gills, skin, and nose/mouth, so until the fluff grows back he has other ways of getting oxygen.

Hello!

Guess what? You've done exceptionally well so far! Congrats! I think my lotls have about a hundred lives because in my first month (they were only a few months old), despite all my research and wanting one for TEN YEARS before I finally got them, I screwed up A LOT. Ha. But my guys are happy and healthy and HUGE and loving life, lucky for me I learnt from every mistake xD And my pretty boy is now a year and two months and my golden girl is a year on one month old :) Many more happy years to come! :bowl:

So let me share my knowledge so far :) Floating? Nothing wrong with him. He has gas/needs a poop. My old flatmate had a golden that ALWAYS got gas. A lot. Most days we would come home from work and his bum would be floating and we would just say "Oh look. Raro needs another fart.." Unfortunately, As far as I'm aware there is no way to burp a lotl so he had to live with it. Luckily hes grown out of it :) If it was to persist for more then two days continuously then you can fridge to help him pass it. On that note has anyone else ever seen an axolotl fart? We saw my pretty boy fart ONCE. :eek:It was the funiest thing we had ever seen! Just like a cartoon - a cloud of brown exploded out his butt into the water. It dissipated pretty quick but we couldn't believe there was a fart cloud! Haha!

Anyway, back to you. The gill filaments or "fluffy" part will definately regrow and having little or no filaments won't harm him. He won't suffocate and die from it, trust me! I wouldn't worry too much about him, sounds like hes just being a special child haha. Do keep an eye out on him though and report any worries you have. It might seem silly and result in nothing but better to be safe than sorry. :D

I needed this <3
Thankfully Mayan and Eclipse are behaving. And Aztec is doing better :) He is back with his buddies and side from going to the top for air a little more then he used to is having no issues and is eating.

Thank god for this forum.... It's likely my new best friend as I raise these 3 little babies into grown up Lotls LOL

Just thought I'd update that Aztec is completely back to normal and his little gill fringe is growing back already! He still does the swimming and barrel rolls sometimes, but watching the do NOT look like they did before where e seemed in distress, now he does them in the bubble wall or while chasing a guppy :)
