I bread axolotls and have been with my 1 female mela and gfp mela male.
I also have 2 female lec. I think this batch were from both mela.
However I never had a axolotl under UV glow red from my breaders.
They always have been pure mela, wild.gfp mela, or gfp lec and they glow green. never RED.

Any one have an explanation for this?

In real life they the red is more vibrant than the picture below.

Thats sounds pretty neat! I don't know how it glows red, but in research animals there is more than one 'glow' color gene. GFP is the green fluorescent protein, and is heritable... so i don't know how it ended up glowing any other color than green.... but thats cool :)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
