Axolotls can live with just an air-stone. I believe this is how those being used for research are generally kept, could be wrong. But this method of housing requires large proportion water changes daily (depending on size of tank) if there is no filtration. I keep my baby larvae in tubs with an air-stone and they do fine. One set-up uses a sponge filter. But once they are adults they will need more room and better filtration due to the amount of ammonia they produce once more developed.


Your female could definitely go back in with the male after being separated, but then again they will yet again continue to breed. I'm in the same situation. I don't have the space to separate my pair, so I'm trying to down-size/sell off some of the fish from other tanks.

Thanks so much for the advice! Thats brilliant! The filters are cheaper than i thought What are the titleso f them so i can go have a search!

I think ill have to get one and find some space. I currently have a tank divider in at the moment, but all 3 of them are upset! The two males who are in one end and the female in the other, but she can still lay eggs this way, so ill separate them as soon as i can. I had to freeze the eggs yesterday and i feel terrible, but i know its the most humane thing to do in my situation of lack of space and already raising some.

Hi guys,

I took some more pictures today of my little bubbles. They are doing so well, i think! They are all eating/pooping/swimming etc. They all look great still! They are so hard to photograph but here are a few.... they're 5 weeks old now!

I still need to separate my female into another tank, but havent bought a new filter yet. :s The tank they are in at the moment has a divider in it, but i know thats not going to work too well. (The male keeps escaping through and getting to the female! I think they're in love!
