Regards.

I'm not sure if this works for salamanders, but if you put a drop or two of vinegar on the rock and nothing happens then it is supposed to be aquarium safe. If it fizzes it's probably a no go.

Just that simple. I fix some vinegar tomorrow then.

Thank you.

Why is it a no go if it fizzes?
Limestone is just fine for a tank but will react to some acidic solutions, it does not make it unsafe.
Since we are talking about safe rocks, a word of WARNING !!!
NEVER EVER collect rocks that were along or near railroad tracks !!! Tracks are sprayed with very toxic weed killers on a regular basis.

Another rock question.

I am soon ready with a Cynops.e.popei tank with rocks gather from the forest. But after som reading I`m now afraid that I have to take the stones out as they can be harmfull for my ensicauda.

Please tell me that these are fine in my tank.I have wached them of several days in hot water andscrubbed like a maniac, and they have now been in the tank for soon 3weeks.

I don't see why these rocks could be harmfull for the newts.

I found this atricle and thought about that some stones have that metalic(orange colour on some parts)

Almost all rocks which normally used in aquaria/terraria are on the unsafe-list. I wouldn't bother much about this. If rocks were unsafe, there wasn't any life on this planet anymore.

Joost is 100% right. Rocks are composed of an array of different minerals. Those rocks shown look perfectly safe to me even if they are limestone.

I also thought it sounded wierd that almost none of the stones outside works. But this was a relife.

Thanks for your answers.

I've always assumed that the problem with limestone in water (like for plants) is that it causes the water to become more alkalyne, acting I think as an alkalyne buffer...
Is this not the case?

Are these limestones? the first old pictures i quess, but not my new pictures? they dont look like limestone to me.

why not simply keep monitoring your pH? As long as that's in an acceptable range for newts, say 6-8, I wouldn't worry about what kind of rock you have.
