Hey guys just wondering if the brown stuff on my black sponge in my filter is beneficial bacteria or something nasty? Do i leave it there or clean it?

You can't see beneficial bacteria, I'm not sure what that is from the picture, but I would guess it's either algae, or gunk. Because it's on your bio media(I think, can't really see too well) I'd just rinse with old tank water to prevent bb die off

I see you have bio-rings under your sponge. You can rinse your sponges (all of them in the filter) in water to remove all the gunk, just so long as you don't wash your bio-rings. Keep in mind that beneficial bacteria grow on every surface in the tank, not just in the filter.

thanks for the help guys, will get onto rinsing it soon :)
