Hello everyone, my name is Melissa Marie. I'm new to this group. I posted this question on fb, but I'm curious to know from other experienced owners on recommendations. Majority of the responses I received were Spanished Ribbed Newts. I'm open to learning from you all.

Alpine newts are also great beginner newts. They are hardy, good eaters, and can be kept aquatic year round. Marbled newts also seem pretty easy. Some people keep them aquatic year round as well, but I keep them terrestrially, except during the breeding season, when they are aquatic.

I keep three alpine newts and highly recommend them for several reasons:

-Hardy
-Fully aquatic as long as you keep a log or floating cork sticking out of the water for them to climb onto occasionally. (Some sub-species like more land, so do your research.)
-Incredibly beautiful.
-Readily available.
-Easy to feed -- they eat live foods, frozen foods and newt pellets.
-Not a huge size so you can keep two in a 10 gallon or 3 in a 20 long. (I keep 3 in a 20 long.)
-Active in their tank.

They're the only species I keep. Good luck!

I don’t know if this guy ships, but I’m in Minnesota and bought mine from a local guy who has a Facebook page called Triton Newts. He’s a pretty prolific breeder.

Yeah, a lot of people recommended him to me. We've spoken but for now he doesn't have any Alpine Newts 😫🥺.

I work with both alpine and marbled newts, and am currently raising larva. They aren't ready to go yet, but it's too hot to ship right now anyway.

Agreed, I'd definitely be interested once they're ready to go.
