I am wondering when would be the earliest time that great crested and smooth newts can be found in the Lancashire/Cheshire area. I have read that eggs are laid between March and May, but am unsure whether the March dates would be further south.

Thank you.

The UK Phenology Network have a great interactive map of first newt sighting date across the UK for 2009:

nature's calendar > maps

Here in NE England, we usually get decent numbers of newts from early April through to about June.

This link is amazing, I wish there is a calendar like this for every amphibian species across the world.
