So a couple weeks ago i decided to take a look online for a place where i can buy worms cheap in bulk. i found this site that seems like the only online site that will ship to canada.they sell 1 pound of worm for about $65 after all taxes which is 300-1000 worms depending on which type i get. That comes out to about 1-5 cents per worm compared to the stores that sell them for 30 cents per worm.

my only question is which worms are the best food source for axolot? i have the option of:

Red Wigglers (Eisenia Fetida)
European Nightcrawlers (Eisenia Hortensis)
African Nightcrawlers (Eudrillus Eugeniae)

Or i can get canadian nightcrawlers at LFS

If your animals will eat red wigglers, they'll be the most likely to breed and become sustainable.

I purchased ~350 E. hortensis maybe 2 months ago. They're slow to breed, even at warmer temps. I've definitely harvested more than they've bred. I'm feeding 8 adults, and because the worms are small, they eat 2 or 3 in a sitting.

I haven't had any experience with African nightcrawlers, but Jacquie has.

hi kaysie thanks for replying, im not per say trying to breed them at the moment , looking more for which worms are best neutrition wise or if they are all equal

nope, didnt even know we had one i wouldnt have made this thread lol.

il take a look at it now thanks:happy:

just looked at the chart. seems nighcrawlers all have the same value just like you said i guess the names just show where they are native to and how they can handle differnent temp.

thanks for all your help, i am going to get the red wigglers like you recommended so i can breed them :D:D

Okay so my worms came in today i bought 500 (5inch) for $60 including shipping and everything!

Problem is the guy who shipped them put shredded news paper in the soil the worms were
shipped in, will the ink from the paper effect the worms and there fore i can not feed them to my axolot? or can they still be fed to them? just encase i am currently moving all 500 of them into a slightly smaller container with just the soil.

I looked at the sight you posted, i am a little confused will they eat the news paper or is it just for bedding purposes? Also if the ink does effect the worms and i can not feed them to my axolotls how long before the ink effect wears out? I plan on feeding the worms veggies and grain products.

News paper is used as bedding, worms wont eat their bedding unless you don't feed them and its their last food choice.
