Illness/Sickness: Big black spot

My axolotl have a big black spot on the side that is growing. When I got him 4 months ago the spot wasn't there, and now is very big. Can someone tell me what it is?

Have you tried gently rubbing the spot to see if its under the skin or growing on it?

It may just be a large 'freckle' that some paler axies develop but im not sure at all, hopefully someone with more knowledge can help
