Bio-filtration help!

Hello!

I have an API nexx 55 canister filter and am hoping to get it all set up this weekend for my Axies. My search has ended leaving me rather confused on this part. I see various things being put in them like NITRA-ZORB, BIO-CHEM ZORB, PHOS-ZORB... but I'm not sure what would be best for my axies. In a previous post, someone suggested to me "ceramic media" for the surface area benefits. Is there are particular type?

Any suggestions?

What you need to focus on is biofiltration all the things that you've listed are chemical filtration. the ceramic media will provide surface area so that beneficial bacteria can colonize and convert harmful ammonia, and harmful nitrite, into less harmful nitrate. Many people call this aquarium cycling. this is very important for keeping any aquatic pets. this allows you to keep a healthy environment. the cycling process usually takes anywhere from 3 to 8 or more weeks. there are two types of methods used for cycling. there is a fish in cycling and a fish less cycling. the fish in cycling is somewhat stressful for both you and your aquatic pets because it entails constant water changes as well as monitoring the ammonia and nitrite levels daily. fish less cycling involves a tank that does not contain any live aquatic animals and uses an ammonia source such as decaying food or pure ammonia. the fishless cycle is much quicker because it allows a higher level of ammonia then the fish in cycle.
