Black Poo

I have noticed that my adopted 7 yr old axie has black poo! I think this means there is digested blood in her feaces. unless the fact that she has been solely fed beef heart all her life or the fact that i just started feeding her the odd worm when she finally accepts it. I don't know what is causeing this! She has slight ammonia burns as i tested the water and got .5 . i changed her water so it is 0 now.
Could she have a deficiecy leading her to digest her blood or something? Or is this jus a normal colour after eating beef heart as there is blood in that and she is eating it, hence digesting blood.
Other wise she looks fine. I also have planaria in my tank. if that might contribute, but my other axy is fine in it!!!!
plz help!

my axies have black poo from time to time usually when they have had alot of bloodworms or lancet fish(frozen feeder fish)

.
you could try rinsing the beef heart to get some of excess blood out thats what im doing with my bloodworms an it seems to be working now there poo is mostly brown. hope this helpede

thanx! i do think it is the blood in the beef heart that is making it black, coz otherwise she is healthy :>

Well i dunno if this is why, but the past owner used to feed her one beef square a week, and i fed her one every day and she didnt gain weight. What does vomit look like? Perhaps coz i never thawed it out, like id foat it until it sunk, she has been vomitting it and i thoguht it was poo from my other axy? Like coz if the water is less than 10 C then they vomit it.......do u think this is happening? she hasnt gained or lost weight.

wow one beef square a week thats not enough in my book, but i may tend to feed just a little too much, how big is she i mean if she is 7 years old i dont think would grow any more. but i really dont know.
as far as i`m aware my axies have never vomitted or if they have some of the others have cleanede it up, but i would imagine that i looks just like whatever it was when it went down.

Our Axies always have black poo. But i think thats because they scoff all the bloodworms they can get!

yes thanx guys! i thought it would be from the food, when i swish it under water blood comes out of the beef heart, and the animal course im doing right now says blood is black once digested. Now that u guys have confirmed my suspisions i fell quite alright! My other axolotl, soley eats pellets with the odd earthworm or bloodworm cube (very messy so i do it before i change the water) and his poo is always a pink colour, well brown really, and i was just a little scared and shocked!!

I read that vomit looks like its contained in a mucous coating and is poisonous if its broken up and swirled in the water due to the toxins and acids n stuff in their tummies. Ive seen her sort of chuck food up again coz its a worm and she doesn't really like them. Her whole life she has been fed beef heart and only beef heart, she will swallow new food, but then spit it back out.

You might want to take your axies off beef heart altogether and stick to salmon pellets and worms as the heart has a very high fat content and not enough protein

As far as black feces goes, I wouldn't worry about it at all. It changes depending on their diet. Feeding the axie once a week wasn't enough- once every other day or so is fine once they reach adulthood- it also depends on the temp of the water though. Good luck with the toiletries ;) haha...

i read that beef heart can reck the liver coz of the fat. I didnt coose to feed her it, but it was the only thing she would eat. She eats the worms then spits it out, but now i caught her hunting it downa nd eatting it for good. I am so proud coz imo, earth worm is the number one best food!!!! I do have axy pellets, but she thinks they are pebbles and they dont move so she wont eat it. i like beef heart just coz its easy and quick and a lot of bulk, but i hate it as a staple. I wish they invented pellets that big, or half the size, or earth worms frozen into cubes or something. Am i supposed to defrost them???
Anyways, she is doing well. I will feed her as many worms as i can tonight instead of a cube.

Beef heart is not as digestable as many would like to believe. If you really get down to it bugs worms and mabye SMALL fish are the only thing they are designed to eat. Not cows, fish bigger then themselves, chickens, or pigs.

I have really stopped trying to explain all the reasons why you should stick to there natural diet, but it should be understood that the best foods should be the ones they have evolved to eat.

Huh - my axies have bloodworm and ALWAYS have blak poo - what colour should it be ??

I either very rarely find any poo in my tank, Or I find a kind of worm-shaped green mass every so often, Normal? I can't remember ever finding a lump of actual poo in the tank. Just kinda hit me that.

The idea that is, not the poo.

Spyyk's poop is usually a funny black colour too, but then she scarfs a lot of pellets during the week, with her normal bloodworm frozen diet.

i adopted her so we was previously on a 100% beef heart diet. I have managed to get her to eat earth worms much to my pleasure!!! That's about all she will eat from me, doesn't like pellets.

My other axolotl has a pink brown poo, the same colour as the pellets i feed him, thats why i thoguht it was odd of her to have black poo.

JEFF i 100% agree with you!!!! I feed spot pellets and earthworms. The pellets coz they are cheap and easy and he seems to like them, but i do vary the diet with a baby feeder fish once every 3 months of so, and blood worms.

james, if u dont catch it soon, or ur axies are particularily active , it sort of disintegrates betwen the bits of gravel ( i have sand and it just powders down into it) so u cant actually "catch" it as such unless ur there a hour or less before it was made. I always find a lump of poo here or there. if i dotn pick it up right away it turns to mush and i got to siphon my tank,....again.

Is it just me or do axolotls decided to pop right after u've changed the water????? Everytime i change it they poo within hours......annoying! Out comes the turkey baster!

Jeff,
based on what criteria? What is the supporting evidence you have for making this claim??
I can tell you that this position is not supported in the literature....
