black stuff on lips?

2 of my axies have got a black moss like stuff on their lips around their mouth.
The inside of their mouth seems fine, im only worried because one of them isnt eating properly, has lost energy and part of the blackened area now looks bruised.
Whats going on? I have no idea!

Hi Axle,

Would you be able to post up some photos? That could be a case of infectious stomatitis which is an infection in the mouth. I would need to take a look at photos before i can determine.

I have posted a picture a one of my axolotl that has the same issue. Eating great but worried about his lips.

There is also another problem in the picture..... Gravel! It's not worth the risk of consumption & impaction of the gut. There are too many warnings on this forum including X-rayed animals who have died from gravel impaction

Please consider taking out the gravel substrate & either leaving it bare bottomed or replace with Playsand, pool filter sand or rocks larger than the head (as long as you're prepared to be OCD about cleaning under them)

As for the black around mouth - I'm sure the experts on here will be able to identify the problem - any chance you could post a couple more pics of the mouth.

Thank you! I just changed from sand to gravel a couple days ago so that sucks but I don't want him to eat gravel. I'll do that and post some more pictures tomorrow - traveling now

My golden albino has the same patches, she eats, lays eggs, and is healthy! I'm not an expert but could it be a sign of maturity... Sparkles is about 18months, what do others think?
