Hello everyone! I’ve had my Axie Griselda for about almost 2 months. She’s always been a bit rotund, but lately she looks a bit bigger than usual and she has been acting strangely.
Last week she was pacing her tank frantically for like, 18 hours. Parameters seemed okay though the ammonia was higher than I would like (Can’t tell if this is an accurate reading bc the API liquid test seems to consistently be slightly greenish right out of the bottle) (am- .25 nitrite - 0 nitrate 10 ppm, tank 68F)
I left it for a day but when she continued pacing I did a 50% water change just to be safe.
she remained more active than usual, and continued pacing but much less frantically, going up for air often (I have two airstones, so the water should be plenty oxygenated). Her gills and tail were uncurled this whole time.
She has been eating though she is a bit fussy with worms. I hand feed her chopped earth worms and she will usually completely reject at least one segment of the worm. I’ve been supplementing her diet with omega one shrimp pellets. I had been feeding her once a day but I’ve switched to an earth worm every other day.
this week she seems rounder than usual, and she has been resting on the bottom of the tank on her belly With all her limbs raised. She is even more fussy with worms (only eating half a worm.) I’m worried about her. She does appear to be pooping but not a whole lot. She’s about 7in long, I think she is around 8 or 9 months

tank params before my last water change (50 percent yesterday, just put some sand in the tank too to help w bacterial population)-
Am- .25
Nitrite- 0
Nitrate- 40 ppm
Ph 7.6
Temp- 64F at night, 68-71 during the day ( Warmer than I would like but trying to strike a balance between running the AC constantly and keeping the temp down.)
Tank is in a room that gets no direct light, though I do have an aqua sky set very low from 9am-6pm for the plants
I’ve attached some pics!
Please help!

Water is a bit cloudy in those pics because they were taken right after I put in sand. Also, just did a quick parameter test- ammonia and nitrite both at zero. Assuming that nitrate is at 20ppm because of the 50% change yesterday

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
