Breeding infusoria

Hello everybody
I'm from Holland, and I've read something here about breeding infusoria. But you have to use a leaf of lettuce, is this from a plant or something, can anybody explain it to me please because I have no idea what it is.

Here is a link on different methods of culturing infusoria.Infusoria are different little microorganisms.They come from the water you use to start the culture.

Sorry, I know how to breed them, but I only have to know what Lettuce is.

It is a type of green salad with large leaves. Some call it "Iceberg" salad.
