Next spring I'm going to try to breed my laoensis. I know little is known on the captive breeding of this species but I'd like to know above all the minimum temperatures they need for "hibernating"in winter in order to breed the following spring.
Cheers
Francesco

Hi Francesco,

yesterday I changed water in my laoensis tank!
The temperature went down from 22°C to 17°C.
The male at once began courting, the first time that I saw this.
Look here:

What you can not see is, that he was waving with his tail.

way to go paul! i'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck Paul! I'll try doing the same thing when I have some spare time. Keep us updated if anything happens.

Guys,
wait until cold and dark winter months. There is nothing special to do.

cheers.

Some of my observations on this subject....

During the summer my Laoensis tank was about 22/24c and at these temperatures my animals were very active and would eat like pigs whenever i offered food. At the start of september however the temp dropped a lot and my newts all seemed to lose their appettites...this was understandable as their metabolism obviously slowed down as the water temp dropped to 15c, but at these low temperatures one male started to develop a swollen cloaca and started to wave his tail more and more often. Today i checked my Laoensis and was pleased to see a pair following each other all around their tank...the male was very excited, more so than he has previously been, but also this time the female seemed more responsive. I then noticed spermatophores over the base of the tank...the water temp during all this activity was 15c and their tank was very low lit.

We shall see what happens next!

Hi,
yesterday I saw this after changing water some hour before:

Successful sperm pic up and biting after mating!

Hi Paul
what was the temperature before and after the water change?

Great to see, Paul! May I use this photo? It is rare to see a clear picture of spermatophore pick-up.

Great news Paul!
I really hope someone (or more) persons will have success in breeding this species.

@Francesco, 19 °C before changing, 16 °C after changing, hours later, when I took the photo it was 19°C.
@Jennifer, yes - use it for caudata.org.

Amazing achievement, Paul!!!

Hi!

They often lay in series:

And the best

The eggs are fertil:

Great news! Please collect as many data as possible. Temperatures of the water, number of eggs, number of fertile eggs, time of hatching, length of larvae when they hatch etc... All is new as nothing is known of this species... It will make an nice presentation in Gersfeld ;-)

Excellent, Paul!!! I'm already looking forward to the development photo series!
