My Karalinii males are starting to get very small crests and the females are really plump any advice or insight about this issue. Thanks!!

Look out! Once they start laying, there's not stopping them. I suspect this isn't the advice you were looking for. What temperature are they (and/or what temp have they been the past couple of months)?

They were in my basement for about 2-3 months and I guess that the temps were around high 50s low 60sF. Now they're at a 70-73 range.Thanks.

After being in the 50s/60s for a couple of months, they should be "ready to go" in terms of breeding. Boosting them all the way up to 70-73, however, may make their breeding season fairly short. They lay like crazy in the upper 60s, but when it hits the mid-70s, they think it's summer and quit. Try to keep them on the lower end of that range (even if it means turning off the power filter, if you have one). Let us know how it goes!

Just for easier communication...it is spelled karelinii, and the full name is Triturus karelinii, common name Southern Crested newt.

Consider me old fashioned, but...for all other readers please use the correct name

I'm not sure, but probably a couple of weeks. They may start tail-waving even before fully crested - any sign of that?

Yeah I woke up one morning and when I checked on the newts he was wagging his tail at a female.
