ravenous: I take the larvae out. Actually, I take the eggs out. The parents are voracious (I wanted to write 'ravenous'!) eaters and they'll find anything edible in the tank. I once tried releasing some Daphnia in there to see if I could raise them as a source for larvae food, but the adult newts ate them all.
My adult newts have actually never left the water. Even when I include spots for them to come out, they never do.

I think they're just as nice looking as red efts.
A couple random tank pictures (sorry for the poor quality). The water is a little tannic, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Though the plants are really taking off:
