and is it the same for both male and female axoltols? or just the female?. i only have one female at the moment but im thinking of getting another, just weighing up the pros and cons.

if anyone knows it would be heaps of help.

It's excessive breeding that reduces the lifespan of an animal. And it is just the females. As long as you don't breed them too often, they should live long, healthy lives. I'm not sure how often is too often with axolotls though. I'd imagine no more than 2-3 times a year though.

thanks heaps, i was thinking of getting a male companion for my female axolotl but im not too sure you cant really predict when they are going to breed and i dont really want two different tanks for each. how often a year would they breed?

In the wild, I'd think once or twice a year. They've got a pretty long breeding season. In captivity, you'd have to ask someone more experienced than me (mine are just babies).

in captivity they can breed as many times as they want.i think once they have had a maximum of 2 batches of eggs then you should separate them for a month or 2 before introducing them back together.

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
