Hi tim

amazing animals aren't they?
my group of c.e.e have been doing great the last few years, this year again i raised some larvae.
but what i wanted to ask, do you got pictures of your males? in breeding condition. the males tend to have blue tails all year around. but in breeding season they are so much bluer.like in c.p.s. well good luck with the hobby and
keep up the good work.

Greetings reinder

Thanks. Glad to hear your C.e.e are doing well, Reinder, and that you've had them for years already now. Here's a pic of a male (?) with some tell-tale tail coloring:

And a couple more general C.e.e pics:

By the way, before leaving home for work today I covered a gap in the glass lid of their tank with a little glass bowl. Upon checking the tank this evening, I found I'd caught an escapee!

They're now laying eggs, some on plants, some on plastic strips.

hey tim what kind of filter is that and what are you feeding these guys they look great.

Heya Chris, that's just a sponge filter in there. And those are frozen bloodworm cubes floating in the pic above. That was taken just after the cubes were added. They go crazy once they catch the scent of it

Aw, they're soooo cute.

I was wondering...
Your setup is about the same as mine. Do you ever have any problem with amonia? Do the plants help regulate the amonia level?

Yep, plants help, plus using aged, cycled water in the first place. Also, having decent filtration (without making the water turbulent because they wouldn't like that), and cleaning the filter sponge every so often without over-cleaning it (as it's full of "good" bacteria as well as gunk). And, of course, making occasional water changes (about 1/3 each time). Also, I wouldn't recommend keeping as many newts as I'm keeping here (eight) in a tank of this size (10 gallons). Maybe half that. Some big rocks were removed during the latest cleaning so it looks a bit bare. Not a model setup by any means but they're settled in, healthy...and breeding! They'll be moved to roomier quarters at next opportunity

Tim, that tank looks bigger than 10 gallons, which would be 25x50 cm. Yeah, some time ago you posted a picture and I told you a tank was smaller than you claimed it was - and I was wrong. I'm prepared to be wrong this time too. But the newts look smaller, relative to the tank size, compared to mine.

Well, this time you're right, Jen

It's 30x60. I've been away from the States for too long it seems. Still, it seems a bit cramped, especially at feeding time. Would be nice to switch them to a 45x90 someday soon.

Tim's a daddy, again... it seems you have more babies than everyone on here, combined!

The problem with maintaining many larvae and babies is going away on trips. During my last couple of trips, I lost some larvae and morphs even though I had people come by every couple of days.

For my next trip, believe it or not I'm actually contemplating taking several dozen relatively new C.e morphs with me, the ones that are a bit skinny and still need some personal attention.

Would be great to be able to release them into the wild at that time, since I'll be going to Okinawa, where they're from, but that would be highly frowned upon from an environmental point of view. Also, I have different subspecies mixed together and can't always tell the difference between them at such an early age.

I did that with tylototriton verrucosus larvae. Unfortunately I went to Wales, not their home land

but it was worth it - I didn't lose one as I would have done leaving someone to look after them.
Chris
