Hello everyone,

I’ve got 3 Chinese firebelly newts who have been eating mostly fruit flies for the 6-7 months since I’ve gotten them. I noticed they started swimming more so I got them into an enclosure that is mostly aquatic. However, I have having difficulty getting them to eat blackworms. I have tried dangling in front of them, dropping in front of them in the water/ land, and I have a feeding dish that has some worms and water in it.

They don’t see to be taking to it. Any suggestions ?

Thank you!

Be patient. They will make the transition in the end, but it can take some time. At first they will probably eat small amounts and possibly only when it's dark. Don't offer food on land, but only in the water. Even when they're juvenile/young, they can go without food for a long time before they will experience issues, as long as they're healthy.

Thank you for your reply and assistance. I will keep this in mind. Take a look at the attached picture. It is the feeding dish that I have the black worms in. It is filled up and at the same level as the water. I noticed when I submerged the cup, the iiworms started to get out. Is this good or bad?

Blackworms can escape such a feeding dish more easily than blood worms or tubifex worms. It's not bad if they escape, they will keep on living in between the gravel of your setup. Your newts will actively hunt them. The dish is in a good spot, but you can place it away from the "island" in the future, so the newts will have to go through the water to reach it.
