Those are some sexy little newts.

On that fourth picture, what is he doing? I've seen mine doing the same thing, and I've been wondering what it is. Are they yawning or drinking?

Wonderfull pictures indeed

And I've seen my newts doing that yawn-thing as well. Not sure what it actually is either.

Hi,
I've often seen my newts "yawning" before they start shedding. Seems to me like they get their skin to break near the mouth when they do this, so they can start shedding.

My newts just yawn without shedding too. I mean, they do shed, but I don't think the little yawns have anything to do with it. Maybe that's they're way of saying that they want to go to bed and I should stop bugging them?

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
