Calling all herpers!!! What time for road hunting?

Hey herpers,

So i was wondering what time you think is best to go road hunting. Assuming that the conditions are right, and please state what species and what time of year you are talking about. I am wondering because my road herping season is just coming to a start, went for the first time this winter tonight actually. No success though. Anywho, what time do you think is best? -Seth

February-April are normally the best months of year to herp here. I'm not sure what you mean by road herping. I like to hike in the woods but will often see all three Taricha sp., Dicamptodon ensatus and Ambystoma californiense on the side of the road (unfortunately almost always dead).

I start at the and of January and I quite herping in June. Not a lot of road herping for me though, because I'm only monitoring puddles, ponds and temporary bodies of water looking for L.vulgaris, L.helveticus, I.alpestris, T.cristatus and our indigenous frogs.

I meant what time of day/night, not time of year. But thanks guys. Road hunting, it is when you go out on a road ( usually little activity on the road is better ) and look for herps. I do it with my big sister ( I am not old enough to have a drivers license ) and in her car and turns her bright lights on, it is a rather affective method I think.

Anyway, I don't know the best time, I always go around 7-9 PM. I may find some stuff, it depends on when and how long it has been after rain. But I got a-wondering if there is a better time? so that is what I am asking. What time do you find is most successful?
