Can I have 4 (or more) axolotls in a 40 gal?

I have 4 axolotls (3 adults and one sub-adult) and I plan on moving in the next 6 months.I really don't want to have 2 permanent tanks. I have a 40 gallon breeder tank with my three adults could I add my sub-adult once fully grown?

I can get a more powerful filter or have two running. I also want to get another axolotl in the next year or two and add them (once fully grown of course).

My three are doing fine and have plenty of space.

You could potentially get away with 4 in a 40 gallon breeder, however you would be overstocked. I would not add another, especially because you will need to do more frequent water changed and be very viligant with water parameters. The rule of thumb is you need 20 gallons for the first one, and an additional ten for every axolotl you add. So you are currently at that capacity with 3. So, if you're willing to do more water changes to accommodate a 4th, then yes. I would not suggest adding a fifth.

Also be wary of adding axolotls that are farther apart in size than 1 inch. More than that and it becomes a larger risk of nipping.
