So I've been thinking about when my axolotl turns about a year old to get another one. He has been living alone in the tank next to my bearded dragon for about 3 months. He is about 3 months old. He lives in a twenty gallon tank and is about 6 inches. SO would it be alright to get another one once hes one.( id get one roughly the same age and lenght)

I would think it would be okay if you get a female and she is 6 inches as well, but still make there is plenty of food for both of them so they do not start out competing each other for food.

Hello there, to give you a quick answer yes technically. Axolotl can grow up to 10 inches and a general rule of thumb for aquariums is one inch of fish per gallon of water. However axolotls produce a lot more waste than fish lol. What I'm getting at is if you were to add another Axolotl, they will both continue to grow even after 1 year and may eventually experience some crowding in a 20 gallon tank. I also don't know what kind of equipment you're running though. As long as you have sufficient filtration without too much water flow I don't see what the problem would be. Just don't take up a bunch of their real estate with decorations. But I always tell everyone that I comment to about axolotls to check out this website Axolotls: The Fascinating Mexican Axolotl and the Tiger Salamander it has been the most useful and the information seems to be the most accurate. I am no professional but the people at the website are. Good luck and have fun

I personally wouldn't want 2 axolotls in a 20 gal tank when you don't know how big they're gonna be yet. They're too messy and I would feel there was potentially not enough room for them, I always err on the side of bigger than the bare minimum.
