Well, January 31st came and went, and I've received nothing for Issue 2 of the magazine. I have the time right now but little inclination to cajole people into writing articles. If things don't turn around drastically this week I'm going to shelve the magazine for the foreseeable future.

Hey..what happened to all the people who said they would write?
And was there no leftovers from the first bunch of articles?
Once a year a magazin must be possible with this amount of people!
I'll see what I still have on a shelf which could be helpful...okay?
Than at least you have a start...;-)

I know of one article that is written. I believe the author (Mike G) is currently on vacation.

Hey John-
I've got my article done, I just need to review the editing done by Jen. I will email it to you ASAP (Friday at the latest). I have been incredibly busy with school myself, and needed a break from everything and took short vacation from everything for a few days. Sorry about the delays.

I can put togeather a follow up article to the one I did last year if you decide to proceed. There allways more "lessons learned".

Well that sounds more positive. I am sorry to rush you but I would like to pace the editing out more for the next issue. That's why I set a submission date for the end of January...

John, I have had my article ready for you----how do you want it sent?

--Leanne

John, I sent the article via email---let me know if/when you get it, because I am getting concerned about my internet email provider now

Hi Leanne,

Yes, I received it, thank you very much

. I will read it and get back to you over the next couple of days.

How much are these magazines? And how do you get them? You could always do quarterly or twice a year too.

Thank you, I know there's not a whole lot of good info on salamanders and newts out there, so any info I can get ahold of is always a bonus. I like them but have never been able to keep them very well.

Today is April 2nd, the planned publishing date of Issue 2. As of right now I have 3 articles. I'm holding off on publishing it for another month (May 2nd).

It has been suggested to me that smaller issues are better than no issue. With that in mind, it is possible at the moment to have a 3 article issue as things stand. Perhaps 4, if someone surprises us. How does everyone feel about this?

Whether there is a magazine or not comes down to you guys. I can talk people into writing articles but I honestly don't feel that's my "job". I am still quite enthusiastic about editing, designing, etc, the publication. The effort put into suggesting and cajoling people into writing articles for the first issue is not something I would choose to spend my time on in the future. No one gets paid for the time they put into this site. Going by the donations received for the first 6 months of 2005, the site will pay for itself (hosting, domains) this year and leave $xx change (which right now is looking like going towards a server plan upgrade for 2006, given the amount of space the forum archives take up and the traffic the site receives). It should be obvious that I do not get paid from the site and therefore my time is definitely voluntary.

So in conclusion, regarding the magazine, do I go with what I have and produce a more compact second issue?

hi john,

I think it would be a good idea to make smaller issues. That way we will all be provided more often with an interesting article or two.

it's fun and interesting to read about the experiences from others. so, if i read 2 or 5 articles, doesn't matter! 1 article is better dan nothing for a long long time

and maybe in the future the magezine will get bigger because people will write more, but for now , we'll just have to do.. and that's okay with me

I agree with Hugo----that will minimize our anxious suspense/waiting time, as well as encourage future contributors.

John,

I'd suggest your idea of a compact issue is the way forward. Seeing your efforts 'dignified in print' as old-time journalists used to say, can be a spur to others to get cracking. I repeat, 'can.'

I think many people with great knowledge and experience feel inhibited about writing for many complex reasons, but largely because of a fear of
offering up their efforts, fear of not making the grade with grammar and punctuation, ordering material etc.

I've been a professional writer for 30 years and the only reason I haven't offered an article is because I don't know enough about newts, salamanders and amphibians in general.

However, if anyone felt they needed an article 'cleaned up' I would be willing to help them order their material, whatever.
