I finally got around to upgrading my central newts from thier small tanks and merged them into a 40 gallon breeder. I used a glass divider to make the land section which is 9inches by 18 inches. The tank has 7 nvl's from a Northern Wisconsin locality and a 1:1 pair of nvl's from a Louisiana locality. The Wisconsin locality are newts I raised from eggs and I recently aquired the Louisiana locality this summer. Five of the seven WI notos are aquatic or semiaquatic and I have two efts left. The aquatic WI notos have reached a length of 2.4-3inches in a little over a year. The adults I found in WI were only 3.5inches at most so I consider them young adults. The efts are a 2-2.5 inches and probably will go aquatic by spring. The LA locality are 4.5-5inches long and not as bold as my captive hatched WI locality. This isnt suprizing since they are ltc newts and not captive hatched or captive bred. They are all feeding on whiteworms, bloodworms, and chopped earthworms. Enough talking, here are some pics!

I can see you really took the time to make your 40 gallon on point. The division of the tank is amazing I must say! Great looking newts by the way, I'm impressed!

I couldn't agree with Jaymes more! You can tell you had a vision and you implemented perfectly. The setup and the newts look amazing. Like a slice right out of nature. Amazing job!

Thanks guys! I love this species and I really hope they breed for me in this setup. I like the fifth picture in the first post, thats when one of the WI males came in contact with the LA male. They checked each other out and went on thier seperate ways.

Nice work, AJ. Is that a hinged screen lid? If so where did you get it? I couldn't find one when i was setting up my 40-br.

I ran a want ad on KS a few years ago looking for 36 X 18 hinged screen covers. Hopefully they are becoming available again. Also, like the others have already mentioned that is a nice looking tank.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
