Changing of gill colour

hey just curious, some days my axie will have light coloured gills and other days bright red although lately they have been almost white what does this mean

The gills get darker when the axolotls are active. If they're feeding, chasing each other or swimming laps, they'll be darker than when just resting. This is because they need more oxygen because they're being more active, and oxygen exchange happens in the gills. So more blood is pumped through them to get more oxygen/get rid of CO2.
