Hi,

I got my Christmas gift early yesterday.

I've never kept terestrial newts/salamanders before, they are housed in a large plastic tub. with a top soil base covered in java moss. Damp but not wet and a few native ferns. Plenty of cork bark hides and a shallow water dish.

If you can see anything wrong with the set-up let me know, as I'm new to this species also I'm guessing Terrestris????

Cheers

Dave

I'm super excited for you! Your setup looks good, but you might want to switch to a glass terrarium so you can see and observe them with disturbing the top.

They look lovely Dave. Their new home looks great too and I think they look like Terrestris too. .

Wow, they are pretty cool! I've got red efts which are terrestrial. I keep them in a little viv/tortoise table thing, but I'm going to move them to a tank as I'd like them to be more visible. Its a pain lifting the lid all the time, as even though its mainly glass, you can never spot them

Wow! That's MY kind of Christmas! All the best, Dave. Lovely set-up as well! ENJOY!

Nice plump female in there, Dave!!

Yes they are S s terrestris!!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
