I have 2 pairs of Triturus alpestris apaunus in a large semi aquatic set up, and one of the males has just come into full matutity, bright colours swollen cloaca etc.

Since this happened a few weeks back, the male has been trying to impress one of the others, constantly following nudging and tail wafting.
The one he is trying to impress though is the other male.
He is completely ignoring the 2 females.
I have never observed this behaviour in newts before.
Could anybody tell me if this is common in newts, or do I just have a mixed up newt.

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
