I just got some elodea canadensis for my FBN to lay her eggs on and the leaves seem a little "thin" but they are quite long in length. I used to have the water wisteria which worked like a charm but was easily battered to death by the FBN. I know that there is the Brazilian type of elodea, so do I have the right elodea that people are talking about which are good for FBN to lay their eggs on?

Elodea generally has three leaves in a whorl, while look alikes have more. They are probably much of a muchness as plants for egg laying.

All are tough and if bashed seem to carry on growing!

Egeria densa - Argentinian species, popular in freshwater aquariums.
Elodea canadensis - Canadian species. It grows wildly here in Poland, but it's hard to keep it alive in home aquarium.
They look like similiar, but canadensis is smaller and more cool-living species. I don't know what kind of FBN you have, that they can destroy any plant :p
For egg-laying, mine C. orientalis prefer Egeria densa, Ceratopteris thalictroides, Riccia fluitans and Microsorium pteropus.

My Cynops orientalis preferred java fern, normal and narrow leaved types. I wonder if in spring when the water bodies rise they lay their eggs are emersed plants that are now underwater?
