Hello,

I am a 48 year old woman who lives in CA. I have the most wonderful firebelly newt named Cuff who celebrated his 38th b-day on Sept 30 2007. His daughter is also in the tank and is 22 years old. There are many of Cuffs offsprings 2--4 year olds as well but they seem to be growing at a much slower rate then what I would call normal. The tank is 30 gallon--show tank--half filled with water--lava rocks, live plants in and out of water, low lighting approx 4 hours in the morning and they eat tubifex worms only. I fed goldfish flakes occasionally for years on end but then was told this was a very bad idea--rotting in the stomach or something so I stopped this practice all together.
He looks a bit old---age marks on skin--skin a bit translucent etc but he remains full of P and V and has the sweetest face you have ever seen! I can say this to people such as yourselves as my friends think I'm nuts and can't really relate to a newt. When he sits out of the water, his skin becomes shinny very quickly as though he dehydrates very rapidly at his old age so he seems to remain in the water 98% of the time.
Just how long can a firebelly newt live? anyone know. Never heard of anyone having one as long as I have had Cuff.
Thanks!
K
